Hey! In this week's blog, we will be discussing phobias, how do phobias develop, some weird phobias, and the cure for phobias
First things first, what actually is a phobia?
A phobia is a type of anxiety disorder defined by a persistent and excessive fear of an object or situation. It's more likely fear, but with one key difference: The anxiety they experience is so strong that it interferes with their quality of life and/or their ability to function.
Coming onto the second part, Phobias develop as a result of having a negative experience or panic attack related to a specific object or situation. Genetics and environment. There may be a link between your own specific phobia and the phobia or anxiety of your parents — this could be due to genetics or learned behavior. Brain function.
Though y'all might have heard about the common phobias like Nyctophobia (Fear of the dark), Glossophobia (The fear of public speaking) Acrophobia (The fear of heights),
Here are 3 strange phobias you'll be shocked to know even exist :
1. Nomophobia: Fear of not having access to a mobile phone
Look who's getting exposed 👀
2. Phobophobia: Fear of having a phobia
Damn 👁👄👁
Something like that even exists?!
3.Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia : *Phew*
It one of the longest words in the dictionary — and, in an ironic twist, is the name for a fear of long words. "Sesquippedalio" is also derived from Latin and means something that "measures a foot and a half long." Then, we have "phobia" from Phobos, which means extreme fear. So basically, the word, Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia, when broken down, says something that is large and terrifying.
Sounds ridiculous, I know right. But just think about it. Don't you get sudden anxiety when you realize that you left your phone somewhere, or when you see that there's a very low battery left? And talking about Phobophobia, many people have it. Reading or listening about phobias would make them anxious. Thoughts like "What If I had this phobia" "How difficult my life would be if I had this phobia" "What would people think of me" make them anxious and they don't want to expect the fact that they have a fear of something. And man, that last one, Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia, what do I even say for that💀
Well, the good news is, Almost all phobias can be successfully treated and cured :) Simple phobias can be treated through gradual exposure to the object, animal, place, or situation that causes fear and anxiety. This is known as desensitization or self-exposure therapy.
