You Can’t Pour From An Empty Cup.

Hello my dear readers! I’m incredibly sorry for the lack of content these last 2 years 🥲 I know, every-time I say I’ll be more consistent with writing and posting but boy has life been hectic lately!

I’m writing this blog a little over a week late as I initially planned to post it last Monday but got caught up with so much stuff… Well never mind, better late than never. 😅

Okay so last to last Sunday, that was, 26 February 2023, I had a one day trip to the capital, New Delhi. I was out for like 14 hours, during which I spent a pretty eventful day! Went to the National Museum in New Delhi, and believe me when I tell you it’s among the COOLEST places ever! It is such a breathtaking feeling to be standing in front of thousands of sculptures, dating as far as 1st and 2nd century CE! For someone who’s a history student, it was an even exciting experience for me :) Although whether or not you’re a history nerd, you really should see the artefacts at least once in your lifetime!

After spending somewhere around 3 hours at the Museum (I still couldn’t see everything that was there🥲) I headed to another cool destination - Fort Siri Auditorium, because I was there to attend a fun, insight event! Now if you keep up with my Instagram stories, you’d know that I really admire Ankur Warikoo’s content. I’ve read both of his books and have been following and seeing him on social media for quite a while. And so when I found out that he was hosting an event in Delhi, I immediately got my tickets!

The event was fun! 🥰 3 hours of absolute pleasure! Lucky me, I was able to get a seat in the first row and bruh it felt ETHEREAL watching someone you admire so much, standing and speaking so close to you! So many advices, so many jokes, so many tips, so much knowledge, and so many life lessons.

Some incredible things I learnt at the event, and really wanted to share with everyone I know are -

✨Never say things about yourself that you won't say about your best friend.

✨You'll never be able to understand or love someone until you learn to understand and love your own self!

✨Learn to be okay with uncertainty, fear and failure.

✨Do something which makes you uncomfortable and pushes you out of your comfort zone EVERY DAY.

✨Always do things for your own happiness and contentment, never to receive attention or validation from others.

✨Just because you’re good at something, doesn’t necessarily mean it will bring you joy.

✨ Before taking a big risk, ask yourself, what can be the worst case scenario? If you think you can afford it, and still wanna go ahead and take the risk, take it.

✨  You’ve got one life. Do everything you wish to! Be an entrepreneur, create content, invest, write, motivate others with your words, do EVERYTHING your heart desires!

Alongside these lines, and many other things, Ankur said something which really stuck with me. He said that one of life’s biggest tips is hidden in the pre-flight instructions. Everyone was looking around, and thinking hard 🤔 What could it be?

And do you know what Ankur said?

कृपया दूसरों की सहायता करने से पहले अपना मास्क लगा लें |

Transliteration - Kripya dusron ki sahaita karne se pehle apna mask laga lein

Translation - Please wear your mask before helping others.

In life, we often try to be a saviour for others. To fix others, to heal others, to be a source of joy and healing for others. No doubt, that’s something very good! (For someone who runs multiple social media initiatives and always try to help people offline and online, I COMPLETELY agree.) But, we need to step back and reflect at something very important.

Is this draining me and my energy?

Am I compromising with my own well being to make someone else happy?

Am I doing this out of joy and free will or am I doing this just for the sake of doing it?

Remember - girls and boys, you cannot pour from an empty cup! Whenever we’re trying to help someone, we need to ask ourselves- will this cost me my own happiness and energy? Am I in a place good enough to be helping others?

If the answer is yes, definitely go ahead and help that person!

And if it’s a no, you might need to take a step back and look after your own self first.

As I quote few of my favourite lines ever,

“It’s NOT selfish to take care of yourself, to love yourself, to make your happiness a priority. It’s necessary.” ~ Mandy Hale

“When you say yes to others, make sure you’re not saying no to yourself.” ~ Paulo Coelho

“You always have to remember to take care of yourself first and foremost, because when you stop taking care of yourself you get out of balance and you really forget how to take care of others.” ~ Jada Pinkett Smith

You guys see me preaching about helping others at @PeopleWithAnxiety , and you also see me preaching about self care and self love, often. What I’m trying to say is, when you’re happy, healthy, at peace and content with your own life, you’ll ALWAYS be able to help and guide others, and be there for them! Everything starts falling in place when you start making yourself a priority! And no I don’t mean that you should be greedy or selfish at all! Know where you have to help yourself first, so you can help others and make this world a better place for everyone out there. 💖
